Galápagos upwelling driven by localized wind–front interactions

چکیده

Abstract The Galápagos archipelago, rising from the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean some 900 km off South American mainland, hosts an iconic and globally significant biological hotspot. islands are renowned for their unique wealth of endemic species, which inspired Charles Darwin’s theory evolution today underpins one largest UNESCO World Heritage Sites Marine Reserves on Earth. regional ecosystem is sustained by strongly seasonal oceanic upwelling events—upward surges cool, nutrient-rich deep waters that fuel growth phytoplankton upon entire thrives. Yet despite its critical life-supporting role, upwelling’s controlling factors remain undetermined. Here, we use a realistic model ocean circulation to show intensity governed local northward winds, generate vigorous submesoscale circulations at upper-ocean fronts west islands. These flows drive interior into surface mixed layer. Our findings thus demonstrate controlled highly localized atmosphere–ocean interactions, call focus these processes in assessing mitigating ecosystem’s vulnerability 21st-century climate change.

Instability of plumes driven by localized heating

Plumes due to localized buoyancy sources are of wide interest owing to their prevalence in many situations. This study investigates the transition from laminar to turbulent dynamics. Several experiments have reported that this transition is sensitive to external perturbations. As such, a well-controlled set-up has been chosen for our numerical study, consisting of a localized heat source at the...

The Inner Shelf Response to Wind-Driven Upwelling and Downwelling*

A two-dimensional numerical model is used to study the response to upwellingand downwelling-favorable winds on a shelf with a strong pycnocline. During upwelling or downwelling, the pycnocline intersects the surface or bottom, forming a front that moves offshore. The characteristics of the front and of the inner shelf inshore of the front are quite different for upwelling and downwelling. For a...

Exchange bias driven by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions.

The exchange bias effect in a compensated IrMn3/Co(111) system is studied using multiscale modeling from ab initio to atomistic spin model calculations. We evaluate numerically the out-of-plane hysteresis loops of the bilayer for different thicknesses of the ferromagnetic layer. The results show the existence of a perpendicular exchange bias and an enhancement of the coercivity of the system. T...

Granular segregation driven by particle interactions.

We report the results of an experimental study of particle-particle interactions in a horizontally shaken granular layer that undergoes a second order phase transition from a binary gas to a segregation liquid as the packing fraction C is increased. By focusing on the behavior of individual particles, the effect of C is studied on (1) the process of cluster formation, (2) cluster dynamics, and ...

Wave-Driven Mean Tropical Upwelling in the Lower Stratosphere

The mean meridional circulation induced by zonal momentum forcing is considered in the context of (i) a wave–mean model, in which the momentum forcing arises naturally from the explicit representation of the stratospheric wave response to lower boundary forcing, and (ii) a zonally symmetric model, in which the momentum forcing is prescribed externally. Wave forcing is confined to one hemisphere...
